Parallels Desktop 7.0.15055 w/Mountain Lion Support

Parallels has pushed out an update that has preliminary support for both Mountain Lion and the Windows 8 Consumer Preview.

Shared networking and 64-bit have both been fixed and confirmed working with this update and without the launcher.

If shared networking is not working try uninstalling and reinstalling (not just updating) Parallels Tools.

VMWare Fusion 4.X on Mountain Lion (10.8)

NOTE: This requires 32-bit mode which is no longer available as of Developer Preview 2.  Check out this post for the DP2 compatible solution.

I primarily use Parallels but I figured I’d try and get VMWare Fusion going too.

I was sucessful but I have not done thorough testing so there might be some things that don’t quite work right.  Most notably are the graphics on the buttons of the toolbar (see my screenshot.) Edit: After a reboot they seem to be back.  I have tested VMWare Fusion 4.1.0 and 4.1.1.

First things first, you have to be in 32-bit mode just as we do for Parallels.  32-bit mode means you lose the ability to connect to network shares (afp and smb) but VMWare Fusion works.  You can also switch back and forth if you need network shares but you wont be able to do both at the same time.

Ok to get it going,

  1. Reboot, as soon as you hit reboot just hold 3&2 until you get the Apple AND spinning wheel.  (This gets you to 32-bit mode.)
  2. Run the launcher from below.

That’s It.  Enjoy.

P.S. Don’t bother trying to run the launcher in 64-bit mode.  You will just get to reboot after the kernel panic. :) A 64-bit compatible fix will have to come from VMWare as one of there kexts needs fixed.

BetterTouchTool

It seems as though BetterTouchTool three finger gestures are having issues.  Developer knows about the issue and is working on a fix.   Hoping for even an alpha soon!

Parallels Desktop 7 on Mountain Lion (10.8)

NOTE: This requires 32-bit mode which is no longer available as of Developer Preview 2.  Check out this post for the DP2 compatible solution.

If the launcher isn’t working or you are just having issues try reinstalling Parallels. Reinstalling solves almost all issues.

Launcher is working for Parallels Desktop 7 and Mountain Lion (10.8) with one requirement and one problem.

Parallels MUST be run in 32-bit mode!  To do this reboot and when you see the grey screen, before the apple, hold the 3 and 2 keys.  When you see the spinning wheel you can let go.  Once rebooted you can run the launcher, enter your password, and start your virtual machine.

Also, networking is NOT working.  Shared, bridged, and host-only do not work.  This is due to changes in the IOKit.frameworks, IOAPCIFamily.kext, and/or IOPCIFamily.kext.

UPDATE: Fixed the networking issue.  The fix is integrated into my launcher now.  Just make sure you have v2 from the following links and all should work, although you do still need to be in 32-bit mode.

UPDATE 2: A number of users are having issues with Parallels after doing an upgrade instead of a clean install.  If you do an upgrade (which you should never do with a DP) reinstall Parallels once in ML.  ML moves some Parallels files around during the upgrade and the simplest solution is to just reinstall Parallels.

UPDATE 3: “Shared” network mode is not working.  You must set you network adapter as a “Bridged” one.  If you get an error that a network adapter on your mac does not exist, this is why.

Disabling Unsafe File Warning Dialog

Found a useful feature.  If you see dialogs like thisbut for files like jpeg, mp3, avi, etc and want to disable (could be causing issues when opening multiple files) it, you can.

You can disable the warning system by…

  1. Opening a terminal window.
  2. Typing “defaults write com.apple.LaunchServices LSQuarantine -bool NO”
  3. Rebooting and that’s it!

If you would like to reverse this just change the NO to YES and re-run.
